HOPE 2023 Overview

HOPE 2023 (Housing, People and Environment) event was held on 30 January 2023 under the auspices of HH Sayyed Bilarab bin Haitham bin Tarik Al Said. It launched a regional platform focused on promoting people-centered development in urban planning and design, with a strong emphasis on improving quality of life through better public spaces.

HOPE 2023 brought together urban planners, public health experts, government officials, and civil society from across Oman and the MENA region. The event explored how built environments can be reshaped to support healthier, more livable cities in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.

The event included:

  • HOPE Talks (Panel Discussions & Keynote)
  • The HOPE Exhibition at the National Museum
  • Launch of a pilot challenge to implement urban interventions in Barka, Nizwa, and Muscat

Target participants included policymakers from the health, housing, transport, and municipal sectors, as well as academics and engaged citizens.

HOPE Symposium

HOPE Symposium 2023 will take place at the GUtech campus. International and national speakers include Prof. Billie Giles-Corti (LINK KEYNOTE) and the research team of the PABE project. One of the main objectives is to disseminate the results of the PABE project in Nizwa and Barka to policymakers at the national and local levels. The cases will serve as success stories with the potential for scaling up and as the basis for strengthening urban policies to be supportive of liveable communities in the region. A call for proposals will be made for national, regional and global scholars to submit abstracts for review and selection by a scientific committee to present their research during parallel sections.

The exhibition included:

  • Before-and-after 3D models of the neighborhood transformation
  • A visual animation showing the steps of the design process

A challenge launch to implement three pilot interventions in Barka, Nizwa, and Muscat—each at different stages of WHO’s Healthy Cities initiative
